[...since that] time we were never as business people should be, and, I don't know how, everything seemed to turn against me. I wanted to leave again, and Mr Indel would not let me go; after that I was finished in Mrs Indel's eyes. When I could keep silent no longer, I left the Indels before Christmas without giving them proper notice - though more than four times I had asked them to change the rules. It was a very bad thing to do on my part, but I had to go before I forgot myself. The Swiss families gave me many pleasant hours, yet, strange to say, I never felt really at home. Harry Walzer was one I liked best - his home, his sisters July and Olga, and all the football games we saw together - but he never tried to bring me into English company.
